Robyn Winfield-Smith

Robyn is a stage, screen and immersive director based as Founding Director of Liminal Stage Productions, Consultant Freelancer & Associate Learning Practitioner at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Evolve Mentor with COSTAR’s National Lab.

Since her ‘Transform’ Clore Leadership Fellowship in 2021, Robyn has collaborated with companies such as Hat Trick Productions (DERRY GIRLS, TRIGGER POINT), Epic Games, Industrial Light & Magic (ABBA VOYAGE) and StoryFutures to establish Liminal as a stage, screen and XR company harnessing emerging technologies, in realtime virtual production, spatial entertainment, genAI and more, to originate exhilarating entertainment experiences that will engage and enthral the audiences of the future through new more immersive, interactive and embodied forms and experiences – on stage, on screen and in the liminal spaces in between.

Last year, following Liminal’s British Interactive Media Association award-winning prototyping of a genAI digital comedian for SXSW 2024, Robyn has led on the development of Liminal’s flagship transmedia IP universe, activating the CoSTAR National Lab’s Futures Studio with R&D for an industry-first VP-enabled theatre production, and directing the first independent UK scripted drama production to use the new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera for Apple Vision Pro. Through 2026, Robyn will be developing Liminal’s new mixed-reality game and digital human-supported XR wellness innovation, with funding from Innovate UK.

Robyn’s 10-year background in theatre and cross-media innovation saw her work with theatres across the UK and on live cinema productions across Europe. She is a visiting lecturer and practitioner at UK universities and drama schools, a regular keynote speaker and consultant across the creative industries, and a passionate advocate of cross-industry and cross-sector innovation.
